Day 22: Flames Over Us
Original Instagram Text
“You’ll look upon the city of people and remember: these are who you fight for. The affected, the disaffected, young, old, from across the lands and across the seas, all converging on this city we call home. We are a fire that burns deep, the warriors against the Tempests. If we get extinguished, so will they. So, don’t die.” — Yuna
Exercised restraint tackling the fire. Pen and ink doesn’t cover large areas very well, unless you’re as amazing as Franklin Booth. I’m reading on technique and studying masters to better texture making and control.
(Also trying to schedule these to post in the mornings as opposed to late nights for the next and final week)
Additional Information
Yuna once more. I love the way the cliff and the flames turned out and was amazed at my control over everything. The division between the dark and lights came out how I envisioned and aside from an area I don’t like, but didn’t catch until later, this became my favorite piece of the Inktober 2023 bunch.
Day 23: Happiness in Hard Work
Original Instagram Text
“…and when I look intently, everything falls away. It’s just me, the painting, and the subject. My mind becomes focused.”
Haven’t had time to paint in a while! Inktober is nearing its end so I’ll get back to it soon.
Additional Information
I waffle between painting and ink every couple of months. Paint is fun because it’s in color and I usually can do it in a group of people in plein air meetups. But ink was my first medium and something I’ll have a special fondness.
Day 24: No Freedom without Labor
Original Instagram Text
“It’s quieter.”
I got a covid booster the other day. The chills and soreness really affected me, but I managed to figure this one out in time. I haven’t had time to work at my bench lately, but inspiration for today’s piece, I cut some lumber up for some tills.
Additional Information
One of my (many) comic ideas includes a slice of life about someone who takes up hand tool woodworking to do something with their admittedly boring life. It’ll have to sit in line behind the 10,000 other ideas I want to do “one day”.
Day 25: A Life Worth Living
Original Instagram Text
“All my fingers want to do is move and my toes want to tap.”
Tried something different in rendering today. I detailed out the guitar more than I needed to, since I erased all of the detail in the end!
Additional Information
If I could own one guitar, I would want a flying V. I don’t even know how to play the guitar very well! But I think it’s the coolest one.
Day 26: Aftermath
Original Instagram Text
“The fires rise into the universe and become the stars that guide us, the black holes that haunt us, and the endless abyss that keep us pushing the edges of where we’ll go.”
I’ll be volunteering and hanging around @lightboxexpo this weekend! This event will apparently be the last major challenge in the way of completing Inktober, but if I’ve gotten this far I can handle a three day event. Right?!
Additional Information
I love the shape that divides the upper and lower halves of the image, with the fire-y taper leading to the moon. This one came out great.
Day 27: The Castle of Eternity
Original Instagram Text
“These things are kinda boring aren’t they?”
Simple one because of a rushed morning schedule. Lightbox started and I had to wrap everything up early for Inktober since I anticipated coming back home late.
Additional Information
This Inktober year has a running theme of flames and Yuna. Now I want to incorporate fire into The Chasers more since its made a lot of appearances.
Day 28: The Next Page
Original Instagram Text
“If you mess up, just draw it again.”
We’re at the final stretch of the hardest Inktobers yet, during Lightbox 😵💫. Almost there, but definitely having constantly tired energy.
Additional Information
For Inktober I redraw stuff if it’s still in pencil, but I use white out liberally when the mistake is in ink. The Uni-Bal Signo UM-153 are my favorite, but are tedious for large areas. So…don’t make big mistakes.
