Bye Bye Pokemon

Bye Bye Pokémon is a comic I wrote after thinking a lot about Pokémon GO when it released a few weeks ago. For a long time Pokémon was my obsession, I would drop hundreds of hours into the games and created papercrafts of some of my favorite ones.

Before I knew it, I had lost all the feeling I had for Pokémon. All I could see were fragmented memories of what I used to have for it and the joy it once brought me.

  1. This is really touching comic. I never actually own Pokémon game until Pearl and then I stopped. I actually grew up with Pokémon when watching the anime. After hearing the news of a Pokémon game for the phones, which was Go, I was excited. Now to this day, I feel like a kid again. I miss my Pokémon for DS and I left some at my Wii ;_;.
I really love this comic. 🙂

    1. Ahhhh thank you so much for your kind words! My friend told me that I should aim to keep a hold of my love of Pokémon as something I can appreciate, as opposed to something I no long have feelings for.

My hope is that for people growing up with anything and losing it, they can relate somewhat to my comic’s broader message.

So thanks for your comment, it means a great deal to me!

      1. You’re welcome. I love Pokémon and after seeing this, this hit me harder than I imagined. You should keep loving Pokémon. I missed out on playing the classics. We should cherish the things we enjoyed. I am happy to comment. You are really awesome. 🙂

  2. Ah, congrats on finishing the pokemon comic! And thanks for showing me and Robert an exclusive sneak peek of the draft stage. 😀

I liked the thought that went into the compositional choices of the panels, like the black pages with a single line of text. The dandelion page “I wish pokemon were real.” is pretty impactful too – I like how you’re so small, and you captured the dandelion seeds in motion. I also really like the ditto and the sad pikachu LOL. SO SAD-LOOKING that ditto mouth. :c

I agree, Pokemon Go has seen a lot of success because– yes, it resonates with a lot of people’s childhood memories and combines it with new AU technology, which is pretty nifty too. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to parts of your comic (particularly the childhood excitement), though I think most people don’t have such dismal views on Pokemon, haha.

Child Allen, wishing on a dandelion, for fulfillment that he can no longer appreciate in adulthood. It’s so sad, Allen… it’s like you’re saying part of you died with entering college– that candle, forever extinguished. But I guess this can be seen as a broader metaphor for growing up.

Glad you’re enjoying Monster Hunter now though! Thank you for sharing.

    1. Ahhh that sad Ditto, I really enjoy it for some reason AHAH! Thank you so much for your kind wordddsss. I ended up writing a little about how we kinda move on and obsess over hobbies in the afterword of my printed version heh.

Whhheeee Monster Hunter! Ah, but I’m getting to the point again where I’d rather do art or comics than play games aha xD.
